Bill and Sandra Parnell, purchased Moss Wood land in 1969 and planted the first Cabernet vines. Bill had a passion to grow the huge grape varieties of France and was determined to access the superior plausible site. He chose the Moss Wood sites for its soils and aspect. Adams had jumped ship from one of the temporary Whalers, apparently a not so infrequent occurrence and had been welcomed with open arms by the Russell family who had been struggling in the absence of their patriarch who was away driving cattle. Mary and John farmed the Moss Wood property, which they had named Maryland in honor of his homeland, until it was taken up by the Kisella family who in turn farmed it until 1904. He was interned during the Second World War but returned to his farm until his death at which time the land was sold to the Guthrie family from whom Bill and Sandra Parnell, purchased it in 1969. Bill Parnell, after digging many holes around the Margaret River hinterland, chose the Moss Wood sites for its soils and aspect. Entry into the Classification is based on a wine’s reputation and track record at auction. Classifications II, II and IV followed at approximately five year intervals, tracking the leading wines, and documenting the dramatic growth and increasing maturity of the Australian pleasing wine scene. In its early years the Classification successfully strengthened the fledgling market for fine Australian wine. In 1997, Clare and Keith negotiated a 3 year contract with Ian Bell, who worked at Moss Wood for 21 years, to buy fruits from his vineyard. In 1998, the beginning wine was released as the Moss Wood Glen more Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. By the commencement of the 200 vintage a new winery building was added to process the expanded production. Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of grapes of excellent quality they have created a steady of pleasing wines prominent by their consistency over each vintage their ability to age superbly. The Moss Wood Mumford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality. Moss Wood was established as a specialist, high quality winery. This was its raisin d’Ore and calm provides the motivation for its continued existence. It is Clare and Keith’s belief that all decisions made in the vineyard, or at the winery, are based on the effect they will have on the quality of the wine. As a new wine producing area, Margaret River has a short viticultural history, therefore winemakers need to be always reassessing their soil management practices and the performance of their vines if they are to comprehend the viticulture of the region and gain the best results in the vineyard. At Moss Wood we believe wine quality is encourage in the vineyard and viticultural techniques are always reassessed and informed by current research, both of others and our own. Inspired by the scientific labor of Dr John Gladstones who identified the value of the maritime climate for the production of tall quality wine. Unmistakable Wilyabrup soils of gravelly loam over clay. Varying topography provides unique and exact vineyard sites.
